Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation, [se'lenakinta'nija'peres]; April 16, 1971-March 31, 1995) is also known as Selena is a famous American Tejano singer. Her contributions to music and fashion gave Selena the title of "Queen" of Tejano music. She is one of the most prominent Mexican-American entertainers of the 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her third on their 2020 list of the "Greatest Latino Artists" according to Latin albums and Latin songs charts. Her attire earned her the title "Tejano Madonna". Her fashion choices are what brought her the nickname "Tejano Madonna" by media outlets. Quintanilla, Suzette Quintanilla. In the 80s, she often was accused of being a snob and was denied bookings at venues across Texas for performing Tejano music, which is a male-dominated genre. After being awarded the Tejano Music Award in 1987 for Female Vocalist, she gained notoriety. The singer signed with EMI Latin in 1989 and made her debut album with her own name in the same year. At the time, her brother became her main music producer and songwriter.Selena has released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) which reached number one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight consecutive months. Critics called it the "breakthrough record" of her musical career because of its commercial popularity. One of the singles, "Como la Flor" was a smash and was her most-loved song. Live! (1993) was awarded the Best Mexican/American Album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first recording by a female Tejano artist to do so. Amor Prohibido was her 1994 album. It became one of America's most popular Latin albums. Critically, it was credited as the catalyst for Tejano music's very first commercial phase. It became one of Latin music's most well-known subgenres.
